Poverty Challenge Begins!
May 5, 2008 by homelessalliance
Today begins the 2008 Greater Buffalo Poverty Challenge.
While not really “a week” - the participants involved will only be maintaining a Poverty Budget for Tuesday and Wednesday - the Poverty Challenge will be covered in the media and will have corresponding events throughout the week.
Today, check out the Charity Vogel’s column in the Buffalo News which features the Poverty Challenge.
Also, this past Saturday, Jay Tokasz of the Buffalo News wrote an article on the Poverty Challenge.
Also, Rev. Drew Ludwig, pastor of Lafayette Presbyterian Church in the Elmwood Village, will be posting about his experience on his blog. Check it out.
On Tuesday, the Homeless Alliance is sponsoring a workshop for the faith community entitled “In Need at my Door: What Can I Do?”. It is a free breakfast workshop for religious communities on the types of services and resources available to those who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness. If you would like to sign up, feel free to contact Devan at 853-1101 x18 or e-mail decicco@wnyhomeless.org.
This coming Saturday, tune in to “In Process” on Channel 4, hosted by Rev. Stan Bratton, Executive Director of the Network of Religious Communities and featuring guests Bill O’Connell and Devan DeCicco, along with Marlyn Moore from Food for All talking about hunger, poverty, and homelessness in Western New York. It airs at 5:30 am on Channel 4. Also, it will air every Wednesday following at 5:35pm on Time Warner Cable Channel 20.
If you would like to join the diverse group of community leaders who are participating in the Poverty Challenge, feel free to download the Poverty Challenge Participants’ Guide at www.wnyhomeless.org. There is a link to the Poverty Challenge page on the main page.
And remember, the slogan for the Poverty Challenge is “Learn What It Means…Demand That It Ends”. The community problem of poverty requites a community solution.
