That makes sense to expand your definition to bring it in line with worldwide initiatives. The United Nations’ definition already includes those people “doubling and tripling up” as you described it. Thanks for getting the word out.

Interesting. I’ve seen the same studies showing that lower income individuals donate a larger portion of their income to charity. I think it has to do with the fact that lower income people know it could well be them at the free clinic or the homeless shelter. (Although for many middle-income or even upper-income folks with poor cash flow, the same may be true, it tends to hit home harder for those faced with poverty on a daily basis.)

more and more people who you would never call the typical “homeless” looking are losing their houses. Like me for instance.

I know that the populations have increased dramatically like in the depression era.

Her choices don’t determine her food stamp benefits; her income and expenses do.

The benefit amount is based a formula. You take your gross income (her disability income and her daughter’s benefit). Subtract a standard deduction, plus her out-of-pocket medical expenses. Compare what is left to rent plus utilities. If rent plus utilities is more than half of the income less the deductions, deduct the “excess shelter deduction”. Take the “net income” that is left and multiply by 30 percent. Subtract that from the maximum allotment bsaed on the househo size.

The good news is that as of April 1st, benefits rose by 14 percent.
